The ICC Midwest Region V proudly supports Building Safety Month, an International Code Council campaign held each May to advance safe, sustainable, and resilient buildings in every community. Building Safety Month underscores the value of adopting and maintaining modern, regularly updated building codes that are reasonable, balanced, and responsive to the need to protect residents, businesses, and critical facilities from risks associated with natural disasters and those inherent to the built environment.
Whereas ICC Midwest Region V, a chapter of the International Code Council, is a professional organization comprised of member code officials and code administration professionals in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky; and
Whereas the members of ICC Midwest Region V perform essential functions in the application, administration, and enforcement of the building codes that safeguard communities throughout the region; and
Whereas effective permitting, plan review, inspection, and administrative processes form the foundation of a reliable regulatory system governing the construction, alteration, and occupancy of buildings and structures; and
Whereas the accuracy, consistency, and professionalism demonstrated by code officials across Region V directly influence compliance with adopted codes and standards, supporting structural integrity, fire and life safety, system performance, and long‑term community resilience; and
Whereas the region’s ability to withstand natural and human‑caused hazards depends on the proper application and enforcement of building safety regulations at every stage of the construction process; and
Whereas ICC Midwest Region V promotes technical competency, ethical practice, and standardized procedures among its members; and
Whereas Building Safety Month, established by the International Code Council, recognizes the vital role of code officials and raises public awareness of the value of safe, resilient, and code‑compliant buildings; and
Whereas the 2026 theme, “Built to Last,” underscores the importance of durable construction practices supported by strong code enforcement and sound administrative systems;
Now, therefore, ICC Midwest Region V does hereby recognize May 2026 as Building Safety Month and acknowledges the dedication and contributions of code officials throughout Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky in advancing public safety, code compliance, and resilient communities.
So proclaimed,
Kota Wharton
President, ICC Midwest Region V
In addition, Building Safety Month is an opportunity for our chapters and communities to highlight the essential role of code officials within their own jurisdictions. One of the most effective ways to do this is by securing a Building Safety Month proclamation from local elected leaders. These proclamations help reinforce the importance of modern codes, public safety, and the work our members perform every day.
